the pillar held stories
the pillar held
Once an alcohol addict went to a saint and said in a humble voice, 'Gurudev, I have become very sad due to this addiction to alcohol. Because of this my house is getting ruined. My children are dying of hunger, but I cannot live without alcohol! The peace of my home has been destroyed. Please tell me some simple solution by which I can regain peace in my home. Gurudev said, 'When this addiction causes you so much harm, why don't you give it up?' The person said, 'Pujyashri, I want to give up alcohol, but it has become so ingrained in my blood that I am refusing to give it up.'
Gurudev laughed and said, 'Come again tomorrow! I will tell you how to give up alcohol?'
Next day at the appointed time the man went to the Mahatma. Seeing him the Mahatma immediately stood up and held tightly to a pillar. When that person saw the Mahatma in this condition, he stood silent for some time, but when the Mahatma did not leave the pillar even after a long time, he could not stop himself and asked, 'Gurudev, have you used this pillar in vain? Why are you holding it?' Gurudev said, 'Vats! I am not holding this pillar, this pillar is holding my body. I want it to leave me, but it is not leaving me.' That person was surprised! He said, 'Gurudev, I definitely drink alcohol, but I am not a fool. You are the one who has deliberately held this pillar tightly. It is lifeless, what will it hold on you? If you are determined, you can leave it right now. Gurudev said, 'Innocent human being, this is what I want to explain to you that just as it was I who had held me and not the pillar, in the same way this liquor has not held you, but the truth is that it was you who held the liquor. Is holding it. You were saying that this alcohol is not leaving me. Whereas the truth is that if you make a firm decision in your mind that I have to give up this addiction now, then at this very moment you will give up the habit of drinking alcohol. Every action of the body is controlled by the mind and the stronger the will power in the mind, the more successful the work is. The drunkard was so impressed by the words of the guru that he immediately resolved never to drink alcohol in the future. Happiness returned to his house and he started living peacefully.
