Elephant Mathematics stories
Elephant Mathematics
Seth Ghanshyam Das lived in a very big mansion. He had three sons. He certainly had money, servants, horses and carts, but among his treasures he loved his 17 elephants the most. He was very careful that no stone was left unturned in the care of the elephants. He was always worried about what would happen to his elephants after his death. Time passed like this and Seth realized that his last moments were not far away.
He called his three sons to him and said that his time has come. After my death, distribute all my property among yourselves as per my will. Take special care of one thing that no harm of any kind occurs to my elephants.
After a few days, Seth went to heaven. The three boys divided the property as per their father's wishes, but everyone became worried about the elephants. The reason was that in the distribution of elephants, Seth had given half to the first boy, one third to the second and one ninth to the third. It seemed completely impossible to distribute 17 elephants in this manner. Frustrated, the three boys took 17 elephants to their garden and started thinking how to solve this dire problem.
Then all three saw that a monk was coming towards them riding on his elephant. On coming to the sage, the boys greeted him and told him his whole story. The sage said, "Hey, what is there to be worried about?" Here, I will give you my elephant. All three boys were very happy to hear this. Now 18 elephants were standing in front. The sage called the first boy and said that you should take half i.e. nine elephants as per your father's wish. He called the second boy and gave him one-third i.e. six elephants. He called the little boy and said that he should also take his ninth share i.e. two elephants. Nine plus six plus two made 17 elephants and one elephant was still left. The boys did not understand this mathematics at all and the three monks kept looking at Maharaj. Seeing them all in this condition, Sadhu Maharaj smiled, blessed them, took leave from all three, and went in the same direction from which he had come on his elephant. Here all three were thinking that Sadhu Maharaj solved a complex problem with so much simplicity and innocence by giving his elephant.
