Sage Mandavya was engrossed in penance. Some thieves passed by. They ran away after looting the treasury. The looted money was also with them. The king's soldiers were chasing them. The thieves hid the looted money in the sage's hut and ran away themselves. When the soldiers reached there, they went inside the hut in search of the thieves. The thieves were not found but the money kept there was found. The soldiers thought that surely the person sitting outside was the thief. To save himself, he has disguised himself as a saint and is pretending to do penance. They caught hold of the sage and presented him before the king. The king also did not give any thought nor did he ask any questions to the arrested accused and sentenced him to be crucified.
Sage Mandavya started
The sage saw, "There is a boy of 8-10 years old." He is holding an insect in one hand. There is a fork in the other hand. When the child pricks the insect with that thorn, the insect is in pain and the child is happy. The insect is suffering and the child is playing.'' The sage understood for what sin he was being punished.
But he is an ascetic. Wasn't even his penance able to destroy his sin? While the sage was thinking, some people who knew the sage approached the king and introduced the sage and declared his innocence. The king apologized to the sage and freed him.
What all had happened in such a short time? How fair is God's justice, how subtle. Only the sages were understanding this. Apologizing to the insect in his mind, he again got absorbed in his penance.
