Danku Ratnakar and Devrishi Narad stories of the best

 Danku and Devrishi Narad

A long time ago, there was a fear of a very dangerous dacoit in some state. The name of that dacoit was Ratnakar. He along with his companions would rob the travelers passing through the forest and would even kill them if they protested. Once Devrishi Narad was also going through the same forests chanting God. When they reached the dense ravines, they saw some people running in the opposite direction.

When Devrishi asked them the reason for doing this, everyone told them about the presence of Ratnakar on the way. But despite this Devrishi started moving forward.

“Don’t you feel scared?” , the people running away asked after seeing them doing this.

“No, I don't believe that there is anyone else here besides me, and I always feel afraid of someone else, not of myself. “Saying this, the sage stepped forward.

After going some distance, Danku Ratnakar came in front of him along with his companions.

Ratnakar – Narad, I am Ratnakar, Danku Ratnakar.

Narad said smilingly – I am Narad, Devrishi Narad, your guest and I am fearless. Are you fearless?

Ratnakar – What do you mean?

Narad – I am neither afraid of my life, nor of failure, nor of tomorrow, nor of stigma, do you know any other fear? Now tell me, are you fearless?

Ratnakar – Yes, I am fearless, I am neither afraid of my life, nor of failure, nor of tomorrow nor of stigma.

Narad – So why do you live here hiding in these dense forests? Are you afraid of the king?

Ratnakar – No!

Narad – Are you afraid of the people?

Ratnakar- No!

Narad- Are you afraid of sin?

Ratnakar – No!

Narad – Then why do you stay hidden here?

Hearing this, Ratnakar got scared and started staring at Devrishi.

Narad – I will answer. You sin and are afraid of sin.

Ratnakar- Don't provoke me so much that I kill you, Narad. I already know that the definition of sin and virtue is always decided by the powerful and they impose it on the weak. I have seen the expansion of empires, by murder, by force, by deceit, I have seen the expansion of commerce, by fraud, by injustice, by unrighteousness, was that not a sin? I was a soldier, I also protected evil and ruthless businessmen… wasn't that a sin? What did I do when I killed the soldiers who treated the women of the defeated people like animals? Have I become a sinner? I have become the culprit of the king, the army and the commander. Was that a sin?

Narad – The sins of others cannot justify one's own sins, Ratnakar.

Ratnakar screamed – I am not a sinner.

Narad – Who will decide? Those who are or are not with you in this journey? Is your wife, your son, with you in this sin?

Ratnakar – Yes, why wouldn't they be with me, whatever I do, I do it only for their happiness. So let those who are with you be the judges. Go, ask your wife, your son, your father, your close relatives, is what you are doing not a sin, and are they all with you in this sin? Are you a partner in this sin?

Ratnakar – Okay, I will go and return now.

And after instructing his companions to keep Narad tied, Ratnakar goes straight to his wife and asks her – “Is what I am doing a sin?” Are you my partner in this sin? ,

The wife says, “No sir, I have sworn to support you in your happiness and sorrow, not to be a partner in your sins.” ,

Ratnakar is stunned to hear this. Then he repeats the same question before his blind father, “Father, is what I am doing a sin?” Are you my partner in this sin? ,

Father says, “No son, this is your earning, how can I share it?” ,

On hearing this, it seemed as if Ratnakar was struck by lightning. He becomes extremely sad and walks slowly back to Devrishi Narad.

Narad- Your friends have left me alone, Ratnakar.

Ratnakar said laughingly – Narad, you cannot confuse me with these words of yours. I am neither afraid of sin, nor of virtue, nor of gods, nor of demons, nor of the king, nor of the state, nor of punishment, nor of the law. I have betrayed the state, I have betrayed the society, that is why I live here in these ravines. This is my revenge.

Narad – What was the sin that you are afraid of?
